European research infrastructures like ELIXIR are paid for by the member states. In a distributed research infrastructure the costs for each operation is paid by the country where it is located. The central costs, in ELIXIR the costs of the HUB, are paid from membership fees. The distribution of these costs are agreed upon by the member countries in the consortium agreement, and fixed for a period of 5 years at a time. In The Netherlands these dues are paid directly from the government to ELIXIR EU.
