Presentations

Minutes of meeting

Action points are listed throughout the minutes (underlined).

  • Welcome & scope of meeting (Celia van Gelder)
    • see ppt
    • All of the participants have been connected to DTL and Training and Education in the past and are now united in the DTL Learning Interest Group. See here for the list of members.
  • DTL update (Jaap Heringa)
    • see ppt
  • Participants of meeting & their training activities and challenges (Celia van Gelder, Ton Rullmann & all)
    • All participants have submitted their 3 slides, also several IG members who could not join the meeting have prepared slides on behalf of their organisation. Celia van Gelder has made a summary/compilation (see ppt). The landscape of challenges, needs and collaboration plans is broad. See further below under Kickoff Working Groups.
    • Statistics is very important and a definite training challenge.
      • Roel van Driel indicates that e-learning courses might be of help here, NCSB has good experiences with this (NCSB e-course overview).
      • Sven Warris and Walter Pirovano give the example of a lecture on the metagenomics symposium of 19 Sept in Wageningen: it was shown that by using different statistical methods different results were obtained from the same data.
      • Celia van Gelder indicates that a DTL WG Biostatistics is currently being discussed with a.o. Jeanine Houwing and BMS-ANED.
      • Walter Pirovano: A DTL mathematics hotel would be an idea. Researchers who need advice on mathematics and statistics could be helped.
      • Roel van Driel indicates ISBE plans include a helpdesk function. Celia van Gelder indicates DTL will also setup a helpdesk function.
      • Marco Roos indicates that at LUMC there is a course Good Research Practice which includes statistics.
    • Christof Francke indicates that there is definitievely a gap in basic knowledge, e.g. in BLAST usage. Jaap Heringa suggests we put up 1 day modules e.g. for BLAST, R, etc.
  • DTL Learning activities
    • DTL Course Directory (Ton Rullmann)
      • see ppt
      • Action: Ton Rullmann has requested feedback and sent out the link for registration of new courses to the IG Learning members on November 6.
      • Philip Lijnzaad: As an example, the R course in Utrecht is always oversubscribed. It would be useful to collect preregistrations for such courses, and to investigate collaboration between institutes on such courses.
      • Diman van Rossum asks about the iAnn calender (see link on BioSB website). This is an international calendar format. However, it is not suitable for courses yet, a new format is being developed (SASI) also in ELIXIR context. We will keep our syntax aligned with these formats.
    • Developing courses together with communities: Metabolomics Working Group (Ton Rullmann, Merlijn van Rijswijk)
      • see ppt
      • This WG has started already (meeting on Nov. 6), people are welcome to join.
  • Bring your own data workshops (BYOD) (Marco Roos)
    • ppt will follow
  • Kick-off of new DTL Learning Working Groups (all)
    • At this moment, DTL WGs and IGs are being set up. The way of working is explained on the DTL community pages.
    • For DTL Learning: see ppt for identified areas of interest. From the input of the participants several WG’s are proposed.
      • Action: WG members take action for first meeting/skype of their WG to discuss: a) mission of WG b) first actions to be taken.
      • WG metabolomics – already formed. Merlijn van Rijswijk, Ton Rullmann. IG members are invited to join.
      • WG HBO. Action: Christof Francke, Jan-Peter Nap, Ton Rullmann.
      • Industry & training – connect to BIUP / DTL IG Industry. Not specific within DTL Learning. Action: Walter Pirovano & Celia van Gelder. Might also be good to have a HBO representative here.
      • WG data/data expert/e-infra (best name yet to be decided). Possible activities: big data course, life science data expert competences & courses/curriculum.
        • Members: Irene Nooren, Jan Bot, Rita Azevedo, Celia van Gelder. Note after meeting: Scott Lusher from NL eScience Center also joins this WG. Action: Celia.
      • WG Biostatistics – is under discussion with the statistics community. Action: Ton, Celia.
      • Interoperability – There is a DTL WG Interoperability. Marco will make sure Learning is on the agenda in this WG. Action: Celia, Marco.
  • "DTL on the road" kickoff event, 1 dec 2014 (Celia van Gelder) (not discussed due to lack of time)
    • See kickoff event webpages.
    • There will be an Education Market with:
      • posters and a stand about DTL Learning. Organisations are invited to present their education/training activities/portfolio with a poster. There are also opportunities to organize parallel sessions.
      • Action: All IG members will receive an invite for the Education Market and are asked to actively participate and spread the invitation within their organization.
  • Towards defining skills & competences needed for the experts for the future (all) (not discussed due to lack of time)
    • This will be discussed in a DTL Focus Meeting: “What is a life science data expert” which is under preparation. IG members are invited to join the WG Data to work on this topic.
